Sony's PS Vita is geared up to launch in U.S markets February 22, 2012 but will it garner enough attention to be a successful handheld console?

With Sony's Playstation Vita preparing for a North American launch; many people are wondering whether or not the system will be a stunning success, or a spectacular failure. That thought alone is keeping numerous individuals from deciding if they should be one of the first to pick up this amazing little piece of tech. But what would be required to make this launch, "Stunning" you ask?

  • Price Reduction- The entry level model of the PS Vita that is only Wi/Fi enabled has a starting price point of 249.99 as many of you well know. When launched first in Japan the console had floundered due to the semi-high cost of the device along with few release titles. Because of this initial sales of the device started out well seeing around 300,00k units sold. Over the next 6 weeks these numbers would rapidly decline to a pitiful 15,000k units. Sony's competition, the 3DS, launched with the same initial price of 249.99 but took the hint when after the hype died down and console sales slowed; realizing the cost may be to high for the market and immediately dropped the price by $80 to a more reasonable $169.99. Would console sales rebound if Sony took the initiative and lowered the price to something more affordable to the average consumer like you and me? The only way to know is to reduce the price, "Hint Hint Sony!"

Current, and my projected, PS Vita sale's numbers
  • Play games online over 3G- While we may all know that the console is being released under 2 different SKU's featuring Wi/Fi only on one with 3G included in the more expensive version. You may be thinking to yourself, "How awesome will this be! Having an HD console in the palm of your hand and being able to go head-to-head with anybody anywhere just like with your PS3! But on a bus, or, a train, or a plane over my 3G!" While playing on an airplane is a bit of an overstatement you catch my drift. Unlucky for you though, plans for the 3G data connection are to be used for things such as Near functionality and access to PSN. If the Vita were able to utilize that connection for online multiplayer, the handheld gaming market wouldn't be in as much trouble as currently speculated. Just imagine playing Modern Warfare 4 or Killzone 4 with stunning HD visuals while riding on the bus, then fragging some newbs halfway across the world!
  • REAL Remote-Play- One of the most interesting and touted features of the new PS VIta is Remote-Play which allows users to play PS3 games remotely on their Vita. This is a brilliant idea on paper; let players take their home console games, then continue play on a portable scale after they are no longer near their home. To bad Sony never made it past the paper stage on this concept because to play the PS3 games you ACTUALLY want to play, it will require you to mod your new console to do something it should do out of the box! Sony should get on the ball and release a fimware update that addresses this issue. http://www.pcworld.com/article/248646/hacked_ps3_firmware_busts_ps_vita_remote_play_wide_open.html

  • Advertisements- When February 22 rolls around how many of you out there will be rushing to stores to purchase the Vita? I couldn't hear your responses so I'll just assume; Fewer than SCE would like, due to not as many people out there having heard about the PS Vita or keeping up to date on what's going on with the console. For a company attempting to sell as many units as possible, having a small portion of the population knowing your product even exists is a huge problem. This issue should be remedied as quickly as Sony can throw out ads or demos for their product.
  • Monster Hunter- Now this one may be a bit more on the personal preference side of things but it made the list nonetheless. One game that may help the PS Vita get its running start is Monster Hunter, especially in Japanese markets. We can go back to the PSP and see sales figures soar selling an additional 320,00k units with the release of a Monster Hunter title, with the launch of the PS Vita we can assume that a Monster Hunter title could create a boost in sales that could potentially save the system. Especially in Japan where the game is a tremendously popular series with a huge fan-base.
